What Others Say About SHIP-HOOPS

Clergyman

It has offered an alternative set of activities that promote the dignity of youth, instills in them a sense of self-worth, and engages them in competitive play and study that is challenging but always a “win” for them.

Youth Worker

This organization has offered numerous opportunities and activities through sports that have given young people the chance to participate, involve, play, learn, and work together. It also promotes young talents and encourage many, including young girls and women.

The people of Penia and of course all of Yongku are proud of the work SHIP/HOOPS have done with all its community activities. I’ve never seen a community so proud, from children to youth and adults.

For many years, SHIP/HOOPS have been involved in educational activities and outreach through inspirational guest speakers/visitors, community events (sports), and most importantly, by establishing their literacy center Akoyikoyi Center.

  • Community Pride
The people of Penia and of course all of Yongku are proud of the work SHIP/HOOPS have done with all its community activities and the establishment of the literacy center. I see that on their faces and I hear them talk with pride of how SHIP/HOOPS is in their community and they are involved. I’ve never seen a community so proud, from children to youth and adult. The village signs also show a sense of communal pride.
  • Volunteerism
SHIP/HOOPS is probably the only organization that takes notice of the Andersen Field and its members are the ones I see frequently cleaning it up.
Professors

SHIP/HOOPS has created numerous opportunities and many specific programs for youth and the larger Chuukese community in a wide range of areas including sports, arts, cultural heritage, health and environment.

SHIP/HOOPS has continuously engaged with community youth in sports activities (wrestling, basketball, soccer, etc.) and physical training (bicycling and track), creating community involvement, opportunities for personal health, and a means of pride in accomplishment.

SHIP/HOOPS involvement with arts and culture (such as in creative learning materials and for special events (like organizing the welcome of Hawaiian navigators to Chuuk High School in 2007) have been crucial for engaging with Chuukese cultural heritage, among youth and adults. Most recently the construction and community use of the Akoyikoyi Center in Penia (Weno Island) has created a central place for the organizing of such community activities, for which there are currently few other opportunities in Chuuk. In short, with Chuuk dealing with several serious social and cultural issues, the dedication, commitment, and opportunities brought by SHIP/HOOP have created HOPE for a brighter future in Chuuk.
